COLUMBIA (AP) — Investigators say a Richland County deputy shot and killed a man after a traffic stop in Columbia.
Sheriff Leon Lott said deputy John Parker tried to stop the driver after he drove past a business twice around 10 p.m. Monday and his license plate didn’t match the vehicle.
Authorities say the man stopped briefly, but then sped off. Lott says the suspect’s car appeared to break down and he jumped from it while it was still moving and ran.
The deputy chased the suspect, and Lott says the suspect started firing. The officer shot back, killing the suspect.
Lott says the suspect was carrying marijuana, The sheriff says the coroner hasn’t been able to identify him.
Lott says his deputies have been shot at three times in nine months.
