BLUFFTON (AP) — A South Carolina school district is taking a new look at how it screens volunteers after an assistant basketball coach sought out a fight with a student-athlete.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that 21-year-old Alexandra Murphy had been working as an unpaid volunteer with the girl’s varsity team at Bluffton High School when she went to a player’s home seeking a fight. The student told police other players separated them shortly after they began fighting.
School district spokesman Jim Foster said the woman is no longer with the team, but he would not say if she quit or was fired. Foster acknowledged the approval of her application last month to be a volunteer raised questions about the school district’s vetting process.
