Evacuations ordered after acid leak in Upstate

TOWNVILLE (AP) — Some areas in Anderson County are being evacuated after a leak of hydrogen chloride in the area.

Sheriff’s deputies say firefighters and hazardous materials crews were called to a weigh station along northbound Interstate 85 Monday morning when a tractor trailer truck began leaking acid.

As a precaution, deputies were helping evacuate nearby residents to a church. Authorities were working Monday to contain and clean up the leak.

Taylor Jones with Anderson County Emergency Management said the liquid was vaporizing and would only become dangerous if winds picked up.

Jones said officials were using air monitors to keep track of any potential dangers.
