Stricter screening for Beaufort school volunteers

BEAUFORT (AP) — The Beaufort County School District has started more comprehensive screening of school volunteers.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the district has hired the Background Investigation Bureau to screen and certify volunteers. The district says the checks are more comprehensive than those conducted by the State Law Enforcement Division.

The move comes after the felony arrest of one volunteer coach who allegedly fought with a player this past school year.

The newspaper reports another volunteer and several employees also have faced charges in recent months for inappropriate conduct with teenagers. None had prior records in South Carolina.

District risk manager Jennifer Staton says the district expects to screen as many as 2,000 volunteers at a cost of about $40,000. The old system cost about $20,000.
