Darlington finally has a mayor after runoff ended in tie

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Darlington finally has a mayor after two rounds of voting and two recounts.

Local media outlets report that when the ballots were counted from Tuesday’s runoff, both city councilwoman Gloria Hines and Jim Stone, a former Darlington County councilman, finished in a dead heat with 814 votes each.

But there were 18 contested ballots and when the results were recounted on Thursday, Hines was elected mayor when she received 14 of those contested votes.

The results held up in a second recount later Thursday.
