Pop quiz: Identify the real Nikki

Pulling off a parody of a public official who writes her own social media posts is no easy trick, but @GovHaleySC, a new fake Twitter account, is giving it a go.

Nikki Haley

The real Haley, who has 38,000-plus Facebook devotees, has attracted attention – not all of it the good kind — for personally penning her status updates, which also post to her official Twitter account (@nikkihaley). Most professional politicians rely on staff to compose their social media updates. Haley’s supporters love her for keeping it real. But real doesn’t always mean right.

For instance, in June Haley congratulated the Carolina Panthers on 20 years of holding training camp in Wofford, although the pro football team has only been in existence since 1995. Then there was a recent inspirational post attributed the quote, “Initiative is doing the right thing without being told,” to French writer Victor Hugo, though the sentiment originated with early 20th-century American craftsman and progressive Elbert Hubbard. To be fair, it’s a common mistake, but one that shows you can’t always trust the Google.

Fortunately, the governor – who is prone to turn to pop music for deep thoughts — knows her Eagles lyrics. Jackson Browne did indeed co-author “Take It Easy,” as she asserted in a post.
