Bluffton opts to settle race discrimination suit

BLUFFTON (AP) — A Bluffton town official says the town is settling a federal race discrimination lawsuit brought five years ago by three former police officers.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that town attorney Terry Finger says the suit is being settled for $50,000. The town will pay $5,000 with the rest coming from the South Carolina Insurance Reserve Fund.

The officers resigned in 2007 and then sued the town saying that racism in hiring and promotions caused them to leave their jobs. The town denied the allegations.

All three officers now work for the Hardeeville Police Department.
