Camden city attorney charged with misconduct

CAMDEN (AP) — The city attorney in Camden has been arrested and charged with misconduct in office after state investigators say he illegally dismissed criminal cases.

The State Law Enforcement Division filed the charges against 59-year-old Charles V.B. Cushman on Thursday.

Warrants accuse Cushman of dropping criminal cases in exchange for donations to the city police department’s drug fund. The cases range from 2005 to 2011. SLED would not say how many cases were dropped.

Cushman has been the city attorney since 1987. City council put Cushman on unpaid leave Thursday night at his request. It was not clear if he has an attorney.

Neither Camden town manager Kevin Bronson nor Mayor Jeffrey Graham would comment.
