Republicans borrow money for legal costs

By: The Associated Press//October 12, 2012

CHARLESTON (AP) — South Carolina Republicans are borrowing money to cover legal costs.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/WaI8QX) the party borrowed money to deal with legal problems caused by the removal of more than 250 candidates from the ballot this year.

Executive Director Matt Moore says the party has borrowed more than $300,000 to cover legal costs from the ballot disputes.

Most of the candidates were removed from the ballot because they failed to properly file paperwork before the June primaries.

Moore says the money is allowing the party to work to get as many candidates back on the ballot.

The party’s executive committee voted in May to cover the legal costs for county Republican parties. County parties were named in most of the lawsuits stemming from the disqualifications.
