Jury duty scam surfaces in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH (AP) — Myrtle Beach police are warning residents about a phone scam with a new twist.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported that a woman got a call over the weekend from a man who said he was a police officer. The caller told the woman that she had missed jury duty and was being fined.

She could pay the fine and avoid going to jail, she was told, if she just gave the man her credit card number.

The woman eventually gave the caller the number but quickly canceled the card, but not before almost $1,000 had been billed to the account.

Police say they do not take financial information over the phone and any payments for jury duty are handled in person through the Clerk of Court’s office.
