College of Charleston faculty votes against board

CHARLESTON (AP) — The faculty senate of the College of Charleston says it has no confidence in the board of trustee’s hiring of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell as president.

The vote Tuesday questioned the integrity of the search that resulted in McConnell’s selection March 22.

Some people complain about McConnell’s lack of academic experience. Others are upset with his role in the Confederate flag on the Statehouse grounds. They say that and his participation in Civil War re-enactments could hurt minority student recruitment. They also accuse the board of making the decision based on politics.

Board Chairman Greg Padgett says the board hired McConnell because he is the best person to lead the school.

McConnell has met with faculty and students to assure them of his commitment to the school.
