Richland County DSS leader resigns

COLUMBIA (AP) — The director of the Richland County Department of Social Services is resigning, as the agency has been under fire for the deaths of two children.

The agency confirmed Thursday night that Elizabeth Stroup is stepping down after just more than one year as director.

Questions have been raised about staffing at the Richland County DSS office and the caseload of employees.

Four-year-old Robert Guinyard Jr. died last summer. His parents, 25-year-old Courtney Thompson and 29-year-old Robert Guinyard Sr. were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

During the trial, the state Department of Social Services was criticized. South Carolina DSS Director Elizabeth Koller resigned earlier this month.

During the trial, family members, friends and doctors said they had asked unsuccessfully for DSS to intervene in Robert’s case.
