USC, McNair research center celebrate new home

COLUMBIA (AP) — The McNair Center for Aerospace Innovation and Research at the University of South Carolina is celebrating its new home near the campus in Columbia.

USC President Harris Pastides is joining McNair Center executive director Martin Keaney Monday at 1:30 p.m. to mark the five-year lease of the facility at Assembly and Catawba Streets.

The building is owned by the South Carolina Research Authority, which was created by the state to foster technology.

USC spokesman Jeffrey Stensland said the Center is paying $99,000 per year for five years for the site.

The building will house a new $4.5 million advanced composite materials research center, which will help develop lightweight composites and advanced robotics for constructing aircraft components. Construction is set to begin in August.
