CHARLESTON (AP) — The diocese comprised of parishes remaining with the national Episcopal Church will appeal a ruling that breakaway churches in eastern South Carolina control a half billion dollars in church property.
Circuit Judge Diane Goodstein ruled late Tuesday that the diocese that split with the national church owns their real, personal and intellectual property.
Thomas Tisdale is chancellor for the parishes remaining with the national church and says the decision was not unexpected and the diocese will appeal.
Bishop Charles vonRosenberg says the ruling is just one step on a long journey.
The conservative Diocese of South Carolina separated from the more liberal national Episcopal Church over theological issues in 2012.
The breakaway churches then sued to protect their title to $500 million worth of property.
