At least 6 candidates want to be new Berkeley sheriff

MONCKS CORNER (AP) — At least six people plan to run for Berkeley County sheriff to replace Wayne DeWitt.

DeWitt resigned last week more than a month after his arrest on a driving under the influence charge in Goose Creek after police said he left the scene of an accident.

Authorities say his pickup sped from police at more than 100 mph.

Media outlets report that six people announced Saturday they would run for sheriff during a Berkeley County Republican breakfast. No date for a special election has been set.

The county’s state senators have recommended retired SLED agent Calvitt Clarke to Gov. Nikki Haley as a temporary replacement. If appointed, he could serve only until the special election and could not run for the job permanently.
