2 deputies fatally shoot man while trying to serve warrant

By: The Associated Press//April 10, 2015

BOILING SPRINGS (AP) — Authorities say two Spartanburg County deputies fatally shot a man while trying to serve a drug-related search warrant at his home.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 28-year-old Phillip Michael Burgess of Boiling Springs died about 10 a.m. Thursday of multiple gunshot wounds. He did not yet know how many times Burgess was hit or where.

Lt. Kevin Bobo tells multiple media outlets that Burgess became belligerent when officers tried to serve the warrant. Bobo says Burgess grabbed a gun off the top of the refrigerator and pointed it at the officers, who then shot him.

Burgess and the two officers are white.

Both officers are on paid administrative leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates. The sheriff’s office says it appears both officers followed proper protocol.
