DHEC board could pick its next choice to lead the agency

COLUMBIA (AP) — The governing board of South Carolina’s public health and environmental agency could pick its next choice for director.

Friday’s meeting of the Department of Health and Environmental Control board comes two months after Gov. Nikki Haley’s pick and longtime friend Eleanor Kitzman withdrew amid tough questioning from senators. The Senate must confirm any nominee.

Kitzman was the only candidate for the job after Haley gave her name to the board’s chairman. Haley appoints the entire board.

The board took applications after Kitzman withdrew.

DHEC is one of South Carolina’s largest agencies.

The board announced its selection of Kitzman on Jan. 12, just four days after Catherine Templeton announced her resignation.

Templeton had led the agency since 2012. She was previously in Haley’s Cabinet as director of South Carolina’s labor department.
