Bar Discipline Roundup: Anderson attorney disbarred, Port Royal lawyer resigns in lieu of discipline

Attorney: Steven Robert Lapham

Disciplinary action: Disbarred on June 17

Background: Lapham failed to file an answer to the charges against him relating to 14 separate matters, including engaging in the unauthorized practice of law, failure to cooperate with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, failure to cooperate with the attorney to protect clients’ interests, and failure to communicate with his clients. He was held in default. The full discipline order issued by the court is available on the South Carolina Judicial Department’s website.

Previous discipline: Lapham had been on interim suspension since January 2013. In September 2013, he was held in criminal contempt by the Supreme Court for engaging in the unauthorized practice of law and sentenced to 60 days’ imprisonment.

Disciplinary action: Resignation in lieu of discipline accepted June 18

Background: Daugs submitted a motion to resign in lieu of discipline, as permitted by the rules for enforcing discipline, and the Supreme Court granted the motion. In accordance with those rules, Daugs’ resignation shall be permanent.
