Haas v. South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (Lawyers Weekly No. 002-144-15, 5 pp.) (J. Michelle Childs, J.) 6:14-cv-04246; D.S.C.

Holding: Plaintiffs’ lawsuit seeks to have the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles recognize a marriage license as evidence of a name change when the couple is of the same sex. SCDMV has changed its policy; furthermore, although the state appealed this court’s decisions invalidating South Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage and refusal to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages, Obergefell v. Hodges, 135 S. Ct. 2584 (2015), has foreclosed the possibility that South Carolina’s same-sex marriage ban will be reinstated.

Plaintiffs’ claims are moot. Defendant’s motion for summary judgment is granted.
