GAFFNEY (AP) A South Carolina county is asking a court to order a hospital to continue emergency medical services that the hospital wants to end.

Cherokee County has filed a motion for preliminary injunction to stop Mary Black Health System Gaffney from discontinuing EMS services on March 1.

The motion was filed Friday in the Cherokee County Court of Common Pleas. It states that Cherokee County residents will face irreparable harm if the hospital is allowed to end the services.

Officials with Mary Black Gaffney announced in December that they would stop funding emergency medical services for financial reasons.

The hospital system sued the county on Jan. 23, claiming it’s not legally obligated to provide EMS services forever.
