Ex-school finance officer accused of stealing funds again

A former chief financial officer who pleaded guilty to embezzling $1.2 million from a South Carolina school district now is accused of stealing money from a friend’s business.
The Post and Courier reports the state attorney general’s office says 61-year-old Brantley D. Thomas III is charged with breach of trust of nonpublic funds. He appeared in court on the charge Friday.
Attorney General spokesman Robert Kittle says Thomas is accused of working as a bookkeeper at the friend’s business and writing checks to himself to pay off his credit card. Assistant Attorney General Creighton Waters says the business also is missing $10,000 Thomas was responsible for depositing.
Thomas also was arrested Friday by state Law Enforcement Division agents who declined the newspaper’s request to comment on the arrest’s reason.
