Appellate filing fees hiked

The South Carolina Supreme Court has raised some of the filing fees in the appellate courts for the first time in decades.

The filing fees for filing a notice of appeal and for filing a petition for a writ of certiorari have been increased from $100 to $250. The fee for filing motions in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, when such fees are required, has been increased from $25 to $50.

Both orders were handed down October 9 and apply to any filings on or after October 15. The $100 fee for appeals and writs of certiorari had been in place since 1990. The $25 fee for filing motions had been in place since 1985.
