College panel chairman criticizes South Carolina senator

The chairman of the Higher Education Commission is demanding an apology from South Carolina’s most powerful state senator after he criticized the pay for the commission director.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported commission chairman Tim Hofferth wants Senate President Pro Tem Hugh Leatherman of Florence to apologize for calling for Hofferth’s resignation.
The newspaper said Hofferth said Leatherman should apologize by 5 p.m. Wednesday or face a lawsuit for making “false, misleading and slanderous” accusations against the chairman.
Leatherman said he stands by his letter calling for Hofferth and commission director Jeff Schilz to resign after Schilz was given an unauthorized raise of $91,487. Schilz got the money when he was promoted in August.
Leatherman says a salary panel he chairs had not approved that amount.
