USC down, CSL unranked in US News list

The University of South Carolina School of Law dropped three spots while Charleston School of Law remained unranked in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings.

While USC was ranked 88th in 2017 and 2018, this year it dropped to a nine-place tie for 91st place. As in past years, U.S. News did not publish a ranking for Charleston in 2019 because the school’s calculated ranking was outside of the top 145 out of 192.

Neither USC nor Charleston responded to requests for comment on the rankings, but Charleston School of Law Dean Andy Abrams told South Carolina Lawyers Weekly a year ago that such rankings are limited at measuring a law school’s actual success and that Charleston provides a high-quality, hands-on, skills-based education.

The University of South Carolina School of Law Dean Robert Wilcox said last year that the number of law school applications is up, and cited surveys which showed that the school’s reputation in legal communities is improving.
