From the long-established Martindale-Hubbell two-letter code ranking of lawyers and the listings in The Best Lawyers in America, to more recent authorities like Chambers USA and SuperLawyers, to the host of online services led by Avvo.com, ranking lawyers is a cottage industry.

As American Bar Association leaders consider more exacting standards for law schools for reporting post-graduate salary and employment information, a new round of class action suits is ratcheting up the pressure on schools and the ABA to address allegations of fraud and misrepresentation. An ABA committee has recommended that an ABA council on legal education and bar admissions adjust its standards, according to law.com, an American Lawyer Media website. Law.com reports that the committee’s proposal includes requiring individual schools to report salary numbers for the 25th, 50th and 75th percentile for graduates in jobs requiring a law degree, J.D.-preferred jobs, other professions, and nonprofessional jobs. Schools would need to report salary information in 15 job categories.

The University of South Carolina School of Law has named Robert M. Wilcox as its new dean. Wilcox, a legal-ethics scholar and the associate dean for academic affairs at the school, will succeed Walter "Jack" Pratt, who will return to teaching, the school said in a press release. Wilcox's appointment becomes effective on July 1.

The final inspection is over. Now comes the waiting and the wondering. Seven years after admitting its first class, will the Charleston School of Law gain full accreditation from the American Bar Association in 2011? Dean Andy Abrams is confident that it will. But first, ABA inspectors who recently visited the school must issue a report to an accreditation committee, which is expected make the final decision next summer.
