Lawyers In The News 01-09-12

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd said it has formed Copper Dome Strategies in Columbia to handle governmental relations. Jeff Thordahl, Billy Routh, and Kimberly Varnadoe (Kim) Kent have joined the firm, and will work with Carl Blackstone and Mike Tongour on regulatory affairs, public policy, and legislative activities. Also at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, shareholder William C. (Bill) Boyd received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the Richland County Bar Association at its annual meeting in December.

Kaufman practices corporate law, with a focus on commercial real estate law, project and structured finance, and distressed asset management. Richardson, Plowden & Robinson said Jocelyn Newman of the Columbia office has been appointed as an associate member of the state Board of Law Examiners.

An American Bar Association committee chaired by Womble Carlyle attorney Jim Myrick has won the ABA’s 2011 Leadership Involvement Award, which honors outstanding leadership within the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. Myrick, who practices in Womble Carlyle’s Charleston office, has more than 20 years of experience as a business litigator. Rosalyn W. Frierson, director of South Carolina Court Administration, has been named vice-chair of the board of directors of the National Center for State Courts. She also has been elected president of the Conference of State Court Administrators, a national organization that represents the top chief executives of the courts of the 50 states and U.S. territories, and of which the NCSC serves as executive staff. She will serve in both positions for one year.

John J. Hearn, a shareholder of Rogers Townsend & Thomas in Columbia, has been elected chair of the South Carolina Bar Consumer Law Section Council. Hearn has served on the section council for four years, most recently as chair-elect. He’s currently chair-elect for the Richland County Bar Association, and he’ll become chair of that organization in December.

Will Umbach has joined Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims P.A. of Columbia as an associate attorney in the business, real estate and finance practice group. He will focus his practice on helping clients conduct business in a tax-efficient manner. Umbach earned his B.A. degree from Duke University and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina. While in law school, he was a member of the Order of the Wig and Robe and the John Belton O’Neall American Inn of Court. Mr. Umbach served as the Editor in Chief of the second largest law review in the country, the Real Property, Trust & Estate Law Journal published by the American Bar Association. He continued his studies at New York University School of Law, where he earned an LL.M. in taxation.
