SC prisons sued by son of sick inmate who died

By: Matt Chaney//June 13, 2018

The son of a man who died at Lee Correctional Institution has sued the Department of Corrections, saying his father died May 2016 after he failed to receive proper care.

Carnell Glover Jr. filed the complaint in Lee County Circuit Court May 30, saying that the prison is responsible for his father’s not receiving proper treatment for his diabetes and thyroid cancer after he was sent to Lee Correctional in March of that year.

Glover claims his father was not given the medication he needed to treat his sicknesses. This, in turn, led to a trip to the infirmary where Carnell Glover Sr. stayed two weeks before he was taken to Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital. He died there on May 30, 2016, at the age of 57.

The complaint lists institutional understaffing and a lack of proper training of officers as causes leading to Glover Sr.’s death.

Glover Jr. requested a jury trial in his complaint.
