CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Latest on the law school commencement address Sunday of South Carolina’s top judge to (all times local):

The chief justice of South Carolina’s Supreme Court is urging law school graduates to work for the core American principles of a judicial system independent of politics and the rule of law.
Chief Justice Costa Pleicones spoke Sunday during commencement ceremonies at the Charleston School of Law. He received an honorary degree as about 140 students received their degrees during ceremonies on Sunday afternoon.
The chief justice told graduates they should lead efforts to ensure the independence of America’s courts, just as they fought to preserve the law school in recent years. Pleicones says that may mean seeking and serving in public office.
Pleicones has been an Army lawyer, a public defender in Richland County, county attorney and a part-time municipal judge.

The commencement is being held at McAlister Field House at The Citadel.
