Private individuals and groups seeking to track sexual predators received a recent warning about their work from state Attorney General Alan Wilson, including questioning whether the efforts run afoul of South Carolina law.
“There are a number of well-intentioned private groups who are making an effort to protect children,” Wilson said in a news release. “However, their private investigations without law enforcement involvement endanger themselves and the public and jeopardize legitimate law enforcement investigations. Moreover, the tactics they employ are often not authorized by South Carolina law and may be in violation of South Carolina criminal law. …
“I want to make it clear: if these cases were taken to court, under South Carolina law they would not stand.”
The attorney general touted his efforts to target crimes against children. His tenure has seen the Internet Crimes Against Children division grow from eight to 26 staff members and the number of participating agencies increase from 40 to 128, covering all of the state’s 46 counties. More than 2,400 people have been charged since he took office.
Without offering details in the release, Wilson pointed out that he has faced criticism for his efforts, saying, “It is deeply concerning that some individuals have resorted to categorically false accusations and personal attacks against me.”
He also was succinct in what should be done if a private person or group thinks a predator is planning to or has targeted a child: “[I]f you suspect a crime, report it to local law enforcement. Do not take action into your own hands.”
