Growing up on a farm in Bennettsville, Brink Hinson set his sights on law school at an early age.

“I wanted to do big business law – mergers, acquisitions, and all the stuff the main character does in the Thomas Crown Affair,” he says. “After a couple of summer clerkships where I was exposed to both transaction law and personal injury work, I discovered that business put me to sleep, but I found personal injury cases fascinating.”

Hinson recalls the tragic outcome from a case involving a misunderstanding about HIPAA laws.

A doctor thought it was a violation of the law to inform the parents of an adult patient hospitalized with mental health issues that their son intended to leave the hospital. The patient committed suicide.

As a result, the hospital agreed to provide additional HIPAA education to its staff.

“It was a case where one could clearly see that the lawsuit had made a difference to someone else down the line and would continue to do so,” Hinson says.
