Jurors deny damages in suit resulting from minor crash (access required)

A Charleston County jury has declined to award damages to a woman who alleged that she was injured in a minor traffic crash. The plaintiff, Natavia Roper, had been a passenger in defendant Melissa Benjamin’s car when it changed lanes and sideswiped another vehicle driven by co-defendant Ashley Wright in March 2010 on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, according to Benjamin’s attorney, James P. Sullivan.

Costco settles wrongful arrest suit for $175K (access required)

Costco has agreed to pay $175,000 to settle a lawsuit accusing the whole-sale giant of having an innocent man arrested in Charleston County. The corporation had Ahmed Abulkhair locked up for passing a bad check, even though the check belonged to his employer, said Abulkhair’s attorney, Mount Pleasant solo Brooks R. Fudenberg.

Dispute over purchase of bottler nets shut-out businessman $1.2M (access required)

Charlotte businessman Clifford Hansen isn't going to get the water bottling company he dreamed of owning and struggled to buy. Instead, he's getting nearly $1.2 million in damages in a suit against business advisers whom, he claimed, ditched him and used his work to help purchase the company for themselves. In a case with roots going back to 2003, Hansen sued Beechwood Development Group of South Carolina, LLC, and other defendants on claims that they hijacked his deal to buy an Orangeburg County bottling company. The man's lawyer, Billy Hopkins (pictured) of Montgomery, Ala., said his client "certainly feels vindicated."
