As I perused the profiles of this year’s Leadership in Law honorees, I found myself grateful for two things: First, that such talented and capable individuals have devoted themselves to the pursuit of legal careers. Second, that I was spared the difficult task of judging these honors.
A panel of legal luminaries took on the job of choosing the 23 recipients of the 2012 South Carolina Lawyers Weekly Leaders in Law honors. The winners were honored on March 15 in Charleston. In naming the award recipients, the judges considered each candidate’s professionalism, community service, civic responsibilities, career achievements and leadership qualities.
If you’re reading this message on the day of the awards event in Charleston, thank you for joining us. But if you missed it, this special section will have to suffice as an introduction to the winners. These 23 lawyers represent a wide array of the profession’s many incarnations. Some of them have had a hand in the most momentous legal cases of our generation. Some have carved out new career niches to meet the changing demands of the legal profession. All of them have dedicated themselves to the practice of law and the support of their communities.
Various reasons compelled our honorees to pursue legal careers. One of this year’s winners recalled that when he was growing up in a small town, he observed it was lawyers who got things done. That vision of the profession, as distilled through a child’s eyes, is writ large in the lives of the 23 attorneys honored this year. They are anchors in business and civic affairs. They serve. They lead. They find solutions. They get things done.
On behalf of everyone at South Carolina Lawyers Weekly, I extend my congratulations to the 2012 Leaders in Law honorees. Reading about the work these men and women are doing, it’s clear that the profession is in good hands.
